The National American Arab Nurses Association is on hiatus! Many elements have contributed to this decision by the NAANA Board of Directors to halt operations for a period, including the major changes in employment demographics brought on by the pandemic over the last three years. Now a 20-year-old organization, the NAANA board has voted to review and assess our mission and goals.
Our current mission states: The National American Arab Nurses Association is the premier professional organization and advocate for American Arab nurses. NAANA acts as an advocate for improved health care in the American Arab community and as an expert resource for nurses and other healthcare providers regarding American Arabs' healthcare beliefs and practices.
As we recollect over these two decades, we are proud of the services we have provided to the Arab American nurse and to the nursing profession, the professional doors that have been opened as a result of NAANA's advocacy for Arab American nurses, the recognition that NAANA advocated for the Arab American nurse significantly by bringing about the inclusion of an Arab American and Chaldean American designation on the State of Michigan licensing document so that nurses of these ethnicities can be correctly counted. NAANA hosted two cross-cultural educational events featuring the leading transcultural professionals and academicians. NAANA created the annual Angel of Mercy Award to recognize Arab American nurses whose extraordinary contributions to the profession often go unnoticed and has honored 13 of these fine professionals. NAANA has provided over $120,000 in nursing scholarships since its inception.
It's been a distinguished record, to be sure. Nevertheless, our board wants to ensure that NAANA continues to provide what Arab American nurses need and want as we move into the next phase of our service to the community.
Therefore, in 2023, and until further notice, we will not host an Angel of Mercy Award Banquet or provide nursing scholarships. As the NAANA website is not regularly monitored in this period of inactivity, if we have not responded to your request and you wish to speak with someone, please contact Renee Ahee, President of NAANA, at Reneeahee@gmail.com, or call (586) 484-2390.
With deep gratitude to all our supporters over these 20 years,
Renee Ahee, NAANA President
